The full feature reference, in plain words, with where each thing lives in the app. It is the same reference the in-app help assistant answers from, so it is never out of date.
Open "Chats" and start a new chat to send an invite link or a QR code your partner can open on their phone. If they already use Rakkan, find them by their exact @handle or the exact email address they signed up with.

"Connections" is your people list. You send a request, say how you know each other, and the other person confirms it. An accepted connection makes starting a chat one tap.

Search matches only an exact @handle or a full email address, so nobody can browse or collect the user list. If nothing is found, check the spelling together with the person you are looking for.

Your @handle is your name on Rakkan, like @janusmato. You get one automatically when you sign up and you can change it in your "Profile".

A new chat starts as a request. The other person accepts, declines or blocks it, and messages only flow after they accept. Requests waiting for you appear in "Chats".

Every message is translated into the other person's language using your relationship, your tone and your glossary, not word by word. You always read in your own language and they always read in theirs.
Under a message you sent, Rakkan shows a plain re-translation of what your partner actually receives, so you can catch a wrong meaning before they do. You can hide or show it with "Show reads back as" in "Chat preferences".

Turn on "Show preview button" in "Chat preferences" to see the translation of your draft before it goes out.

Every chat has its own settings panel holding your relationship type, the tone you want, and private notes about the two of you. The engine reads all of it on every message, so changing it changes how you sound.

Add your pet names, in-jokes and special words to the chat's glossary so they are kept or explained instead of translated literally.

The tone of a chat is set in that chat's settings panel. It decides how formal, playful or intimate your words come out in your partner's language.

When your draft contains an idiom, sarcasm or wordplay that will not survive translation, a note appears above the composer with a one-tap safer rewrite. If a phrase could mean two things, it asks which one you meant. It never blocks sending.
Editing a message you already sent translates it again for your partner, and forwarding a message translates it again for whoever receives it.
For a message that really matters you can ask for Rakkan's best translation model with the chip above the composer. How many of those you get each day depends on your plan.

Every message you receive has a small flag in its corner. Tap it to report the translation, and add what it should have said if you know.
Hold the microphone in the composer to record a voice message. Your partner hears your real voice and reads a translated transcript of what you said.
Voice and video notes always record, send and play on every plan. The free plan includes a limited number of transcripts each month, and paid plans have no limit.

The video button in the composer records a video that is transcribed and translated while you speak. You can correct the text before sending, and your corrected version is what gets translated.
Attach from your gallery or take a new photo with Rakkan's camera. A caption is translated like any message, and you can send in higher quality.
Several photos sent one after another are grouped into a single album bubble. Tap any of them to open the album and swipe through it.
The camera in the attach menu is Rakkan's own. You can switch between the front and back lens, and a selfie is saved exactly the way you saw it in the preview.
Mark a photo or video as view once and it can be opened a single time, then it is gone from the chat.
Explicit messages are translated faithfully only when both of you have "Safe mode" switched off, so if either side still has it on the message comes out softened. "Safe mode" sits in "Chat preferences". Faithful translation and the flame photos and videos are part of the paid plans.

The emoji button in the composer also holds searchable GIFs and stickers.
Double tap a message to send a heart, or hold it to pick another reaction. Reactions sit in the corner of the bubble.
Swipe a message sideways to reply to it, or hold it and choose reply.
Open the search box in a chat to look through your whole history with that person, not only the part on screen.
Hold a message and star it to keep it. "Starred messages" in your "Profile" lists everything you saved, from every chat.

Hold the send button to schedule a message for a moment in your partner's own time zone, like their eight in the morning. It is part of the paid plans.
The heart in the chat header sends a soft ping with its own sound and vibration, with no text at all. You can send three a day in a chat, and it is free.
Hold a chat in the list to peek at the last messages without opening it. Peeking never marks anything as read.

Hold a message to delete it. You can remove it only for yourself, or for both of you.
Deleting a chat removes only your copy, never your partner's. It waits in "Recently Deleted" for five days, where you can restore it or empty the whole list at once.

Open the chat's settings panel and choose "Export chat" to download your history as a text file, or as a zip that also holds the photos, videos and voice messages. It is free on every plan.

"Auto-save media" in "Chat preferences" saves the photos and videos you receive straight to your phone. View once and flame media are never saved this way.

The camera icon at the top of a chat starts a call. Calls are unlimited on every plan.
During a call each person's speech is transcribed and translated live, so you read your partner's words in your own language while they are still speaking. You turn captions on and off from the call controls.
Calls themselves are unlimited, but the live captions are metered because the speech service is paid by the minute. Every account gets a one time bonus of caption minutes to try them, and the higher your plan the more caption minutes it includes each month. There is no separate minute pack.

"Show my words" in the call controls also displays what the app heard you say, which helps when the room is noisy or the recognizer mishears you.
If someone is speaking a different language than usual, change the caption language from the picker in the call controls so the recognizer listens for the right one.
Check "Call ringing by device" in "Notifications": every phone, tablet and browser you use has its own ring switch, and a call only rings on the ones that are on.

A missed call sends a notification and leaves a line in the chat, so you can both see when it happened.
You can set your own full screen photo for a person, shown behind their picture while you call them. It is private to you and they never see it.

Open "Notifications" in your "Profile" and switch "Push notifications" off and then on again. That gives your device a fresh notification identity and fixes most silent phones. Check too that your phone's own settings still allow notifications for Rakkan.

The speaker icon at the top of your chat list mutes every sound in the app, including the chime, the ringtone and the call tones. The same switch is "Notification sounds" in "Chat preferences".

Swipe or hold a chat in the list to mute it. A muted chat stops notifying you and stops counting toward your unread badge.

Tap your partner's name at the top of the chat to open their card, then edit the name and photo you see for them. Your version is private, it never touches their real profile and they never see it.

"Theme & wallpaper" in your "Profile" changes the colors of the app and the background of your chats, including one of your own photos as a wallpaper. It is part of the higher plans.

Record about a minute of your own speech under "Your voice" in your "Profile", and your partner can then hear your messages read aloud in your actual voice, speaking their language. You can only record your own voice, with your consent, and one tap deletes it whenever you want. It is part of the higher plans.

The app language is the one you read the menus in. Your own language, the one your messages are translated from and into, is set in your "Profile". When those two do not match, Rakkan offers to fix it.

Add or change your photo in your "Profile". Pick one from your gallery or take a new one, then crop it.

When a name is written in Thai, Lao, Khmer or another script, Rakkan shows a Latin reading of it beside the name so you can read and say it.
When one of you mentions something durable, like a birthday, a hometown or a sister's name, a small card asks the other person to confirm it. Confirmed details go into every later translation, which is how pronouns and family words come out right.

Some messages carry something cultural that a translation alone cannot show. A private note then explains what was really meant. Only you see it.
"Your story" turns your chat history into a slideshow of your time together, with a share card that shows only counts and never anything you wrote.

For a conversation face to face you can put one phone between you with the screen split, each half in one language. You hold your half while you speak and the phone says it in the other language. It is part of the paid plans.

"Cooldown / send guard" in "Chat preferences" shows a gentle card before a heated message goes out, offering to edit it or send it anyway. It never blocks a message and it stays off until you turn it on.

Your plan sets how many chats can be active at once and how many caption minutes you get each month, and it unlocks the extras like themes, scheduled send and unlimited transcripts. Open "Upgrade" to see the current plans side by side.

Your first paid subscription starts with a three day free trial and the first charge only happens on the fourth day. The trial is one time per account.

A chat becomes active when you send in it, and your plan decides how many can be active at the same time. Chats over that number still work, just more slowly, they are never blocked. You choose which ones are active under "Your plan".

"Your plan" in your "Profile" shows your current plan and how long it runs. A subscription bought inside the app is managed through your device's app store account, and cancelling keeps your plan until the end of the period you already paid for.

Gold is the top plan, with the highest limits of all. It is not listed next to the everyday plans.
You can give someone a Rakkan plan for a number of months. They get a code to redeem on their own account.
A verifiable PDF book of your relationship, curated from your own chat, made for a visa or immigration application. Every book carries a code and a QR that anyone can check, and it is a one time thing, not a subscription.

A new account gets a six digit code by email. Enter it to finish signing up, and look in your spam folder if it has not arrived after a minute.
Change your password in your "Profile". If you cannot sign in at all, use forgot password on the sign in screen to get a code by email.

"Export my data" in your account settings downloads everything Rakkan holds about you as a single file.

"Delete account" removes your profile, your chats, your messages and your connections for good. It cannot be undone.

Rakkan sends your messages to an AI service to translate them, which is the whole point of the app, so it asks you once to agree before you start.
You can block a person from their card or from the chat's settings panel. A blocked person cannot message or call you.
