English to Thai translation chat, built for couples
In short. Rakkan is a real-time chat messenger, like WhatsApp or LINE, that translates every message between English and Thai both ways, inline. Unlike Google Translate, it keeps the things Thai actually depends on, the right gendered pronoun (ผม vs ฉัน), the politeness particle (ครับ vs ค่ะ), dropped subjects, and who เขา refers to, and it shows you a read-back of what your partner will really read before you send. It is built for talking to one person you love, not for travel lookups.
What is Rakkan?
Rakkan is a real-time chat messenger, like WhatsApp or LINE, where every message is translated between your language and your partner's, both ways. It reads a rolling window of your last 8 messages plus your saved relationship context, shows a read-back of what you actually said, captions your live video calls, and speaks seven languages across any pair. The first chat is free.
Why is English-Thai so hard to translate?
Thai is high-context and gendered. The speaker's gender changes the word for I and the politeness particle, subjects and pronouns are routinely dropped, kinship words stand in for you and he or she by relative age, and เขา is gender-neutral. A phrase-at-a-time translator has no idea who is talking, so it guesses, and the warmth and the meaning both slip.
Where generic translators break Thai, and what Rakkan does
| Thai feature | A generic translator | Rakkan |
|---|---|---|
| The word for I | Picks one gender, often wrong | Locks it to the sender's gender (ผม for men, ฉัน/หนู for women) |
| Politeness particles (ครับ / ค่ะ) | Drops them, so it reads blunt or rude | Keeps the right particle for the sender's gender and your register |
| Dropped subjects and pronouns | Produces ambiguous, literal English | Fills them in from your last 8 messages |
| เขา (he or she) | Guesses the gender | Resolves it from context and people you have saved |
| Age-relative kinship (พี่ / น้อง) | Flattens to a single wrong word | Keeps the age-relative meaning |
| Pet names (ที่รัก, เมีย, จ๋า) | Translates them literally or drops them | Your glossary keeps them exactly as you two use them |
What changes when you switch
No more copy-paste loop
With Google Translate you copy each message out, translate it, read it, write a reply, translate that, paste it back, both directions, every message. Rakkan is the chat itself, so the translation happens inline both ways and your whole history stays readable in your own language.
You see it before you send
Every message shows a read-back: your Thai (or English) translated straight back into your own words, so you know how it will land before you hit send. No more sending and hoping, and no more accidental bank-letter tone for I miss you.
English-Thai translation chat FAQ
What is the best app to chat with my Thai girlfriend or boyfriend in English?
Rakkan is built for exactly this. It is a real-time chat messenger, like WhatsApp or LINE, where every message is translated between English and Thai both ways, inline. It keeps your tone, pet names and history, uses the right gender pronouns and politeness particles, and shows a read-back of what you actually said before it sends, so you are never guessing how it lands in Thai.
Why does Google Translate get Thai wrong?
Thai works in ways a phrase-at-a-time tool cannot handle. The word for I changes with the speaker's gender (ผม for men, ฉัน or หนู for women), sentences end in gender-specific politeness particles (ครับ for men, ค่ะ for women), subjects and pronouns are often dropped, and เขา means both he and she. Google Translate guesses, so a man's message can read as if a woman wrote it, and my love turns into something that sounds like a bank letter. Rakkan knows who is talking and keeps it consistent.
Does Rakkan handle Thai politeness particles like ครับ and ค่ะ?
Yes. Rakkan locks the first-person pronoun and the sentence-final particles to the sender's gender and the register of your relationship, so your messages sound natural and polite in Thai instead of blunt, robotic or mismatched. It does the same in reverse, so your partner's warmth survives the trip into English.
Can I video call my Thai partner with live translated captions?
Yes. On a 1:1 video call, each sentence appears as a live caption in your own language as the other person speaks, so you can actually follow a conversation in real time across English and Thai.
Does Rakkan remember what we were talking about?
Yes. On every message it automatically reads a rolling window of your last 8 messages, in both languages, plus your saved relationship context, so slang, pronouns, names and the current topic carry across the translation instead of resetting on each line.
Is Rakkan free, and does it work on iPhone and Android?
Your first chat is free, with no card needed. Rakkan runs in your browser and installs to your home screen on iPhone and Android, so it opens like a normal app, with an Android app on Google Play. Paid plans add more active chats and live call captions.
